I’m writing this letter on Day 17 of my Whole30, and yes, I do owe you a recap of Days 12-15 – it’s in draft form, but I felt this post took precedence over that one for the time being.
I wanted to make time to share my feelings about this blog and my experience over the last six months with the paleo lifestyle as well as Whole30. Writing this blog while going trough a major life transition (in more ways than you will understand unless you know me personally) has been a real wake up call and a major positive influence in my day to day life. While I may not post every single day, I’m constantly brainstorming, analyzing, learning, taking pictures, reading new books, trying to improve my fitness level and attempting to reshape the way I see myself and the world around me.
I wanted to say thank you – to you. Whether you are someone who has impacted my life directly or indirectly over the last six months, you have played a part in this change, my progress and my commitment to becoming a better version of myself – both mentally and physically. One of my favorite songs resonated with me in a different way this morning on the way to work (the first day my Tiger Blood is kicking in). Anyone familiar with AWOLNATION? Love ’em? (I do.) Hate ’em? (Sorry.) Never heard of ’em? (Which rock are you living under?) Regardless, I hope that if you’re reading this you’ll take a minute to listen to the song at the bottom of this post, to maybe better understand the inner workings of my brain a bit better.
Let’s first clarify that music is very important to me. No, I’m not a musician. It’s my therapy. It’s open to interpretation. It’s always there for whatever mood you might be in. These are just my thoughts on this song at this point in my life, and maybe it means something totally different to someone else … I read one analysis about how the following song is “about the zombie apocalypse” … personally, I think it cheapens the artistry to view it that way, but hey, to each their own.
“Jump On My Shoulders” is no longer just a fun song I bop around in the car to mindlessly. For me, it’s become a rally cry, a song that describes how I feel about the people that support me and hopefully feel my support in return through whatever challenges they face. It’s about sticking together, identifying our goals, and helping each other reach them. Consider the “mad man” or “devil” in this case those sneaky bad habits trying to creep back into our lives and prohibit further progress or those feelings of self-doubt, negativity and frustration – but together we’ve helped keep them at bay and regained control. I’d also like to caveat that not every lyric in this song applies … I’m not sure why they want to “live in the water” and are “scared of the city” … chalk it up to creative license or maybe enlighten me. Who knows, the zombie apocalypse theorist may have been on to something after all.
I digress. I am beyond lucky to have one person whose shoulders I use daily – my co-blogger and bestie, Jeanie. I hope she feels the same way about the kind of support I try to reciprocate to her. But she’s not the only one that has lifted me up and helped me push through obstacles or frustration.
- Maybe you are a close personal friend or a family member.
- Maybe you’re a member of our “secret Facebook group” (guess that cat’s out of the bag), which was a major inspiration to start a blog in the first place.
- You might be my zumba instructor or a friend from class.
- Maybe you forced me to challenge myself and run, even when I didn’t want to, and I’m grateful for it now.
- I have friends that check in now and joke making sure my work at lunch is paleo, or send me pictures of their healthy meals that they know I will appreciate.
- You might be a total stranger that has liked or shared a status or picture.
- You might be someone that has never interacted with the blog except to stop by and read it – and that in itself has been so encouraging (checking stats and watching them grow has been the coolest thing since I gave up sliced bread).
- You could be someone I interacted with at a networking event that’s encouraged and supported our new project.
- Maybe you are a fellow blogger that has commented or retweeted me.
- Maybe you’re a cookbook author that I’ve never met or interacted with that has changed the way I see food.
- Maybe you’re the creator of a program that’s currently giving me power and control over my life and how I feel – or maybe you’re a fellow participant in said program.
Whomever you are, if you are reading this, know that you have positively impacted my life, and I hope that one day I can try to return the favor. (Wasn’t she talking about some song?) I digress once more. You’ve each already said what you’re about to hear to me – whether you were aware of it or not. I want to reply and say please, if you need someone to bounce questions or ideas off of, if you want to share your success, if you slipped and need to get back on track: you can always reach out and jump on my shoulders for some support … it’s the least I can do.
